Facilities and Grounds
The Facilities Department oversees maintenance of more than 4 million square feet of building space and nearly 900 acres at the district's 31 schools, three Community Education learning centers and three support facilities.
Each District 196 school has a building chief responsible for making sure the building is safe, clean and well maintained. The building chiefs receive support from custodians, groundskeepers and maintenance workers.
The Facilities Department develops and updates plans for addressing ongoing maintenance projects and environmental safety repairs at all district-owned buildings. The department handles ongoing renovation, remodeling and improvement projects, and contracts for services such as refuse removal and recycling, snow removal and major repairs.
The average age of all District 196 schools is 19 years. Click here for a site inventory of each district-owned school and facility, including the year opened, size and building additions.
