ROSEMOUNT, Minn. -- Members of the Apple Valley High School wrestling team captured the school's 12th straight Class AAA team title with a win over Anoka High School in the championship match of the state wrestling team tournament March 2 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Apple Valley defeated Minnetonka 73-3 in the quarterfinal round and Hastings 52-12 in the semifinals in route to a 30-24 win over Anoka in the title match. This is Apple Valley's 25th team wrestling title in 34 appearances at the state tournament.
Members of the Apple Valley team (pictured following their section championship win Feb. 17) include captains Gable Stevenson, Jalen Thul, Tanyi Besong and Kyle Rathman, and Regan Schrempp, Martin Stewart, Dylan Anderson, Adam Mickelson, Peyton McLagan, Brady Gross, Sebas Swiggum, Nate Larson, Michael Mattison, Arthur Quinones, Devin Roberts, Tony Watts, Jonah Johnson, Carlos Jimenez and Tyler Kim. Dalen Wasmund is the head coach and assistant coaches are Josh Barlage, Jamell Tidwell, Rudy James, Nic Barclay, Tony Abbott and Don Cheney.
The individual portion of the tournament began March 3. Seventeen District 196 students qualified for the individual tournament, including 11 from Apple Valley, four from Eagan High School and two from Eastview High School. Individual qualifiers are Regan Schrempp, Adam Mickelson, Brady Gross, Sebas Swiggum, Kyle Rathman, Nate Larson, Devin Roberts, Jalen Thul, Jonah Johnson, Tanyi Besong and Gable Steveson from Apple Valley; Kaden Gage, Xavier Rosenbloom, Marcus McGinley and Roth Stricker from Eagan, and Alex Lindstrom and Mike Delich from Eastview.
