ROSEMOUNT, Minn. -- In November, an attendance area was approved for the new elementary being built in District 196 and the school's first principal was selected. At the School Board's Dec. 12 meeting, the school that has until now been known as elementary 19 was given a name: East Lake Elementary School.

East Lake was suggested 25 times among the more than 1,000 suggestions that were submitted on the district website in October and November. East Lake is a 40-acre wetland located just west of where the new school is being built at the southwest corner of Diamond Path and County Road 46 in Lakeville. East Lake Community Park, a city of Lakeville park, surrounds the lake, which will be visible from parts of the school when it opens next fall for the start of the 2017-18 school year.

East Lake was one of three possible names selected by a committee of parents whose children will be attending the school next year. The parent committee met Nov. 30 to consider nine names that had been selected by the administration from the suggestions submitted online. The committee could not reach consensus on a single name, so it returned three possibilities to the administration to select one name to recommend to the board. The other two possibilities, Eagle Ridge and Eagle View, were not selected because there are schools by the same name in the Burnsville-Eagan Savage School District and the New Prague School District. There are East Lake elementary schools in other states, but none currently in Minnesota.

East Lake will become the nineteenth elementary school in District 196 and the first new elementary since Red Pine opened in 1995. Funding for the school was included in the bond referendum approved by district voters in November 2015. Construction of the new school was identified as the top priority among the referendum projects to provide relief for overcrowding at adjacent elementary schools due to the addition of full-day kindergarten, the expansion of school-based preschool and growth in the southern part of the district. The attendance area established for East Lake Elementary includes parts of the current attendance areas of Diamond Path, Highland, Parkview, Rosemount and Shannon Park elementary schools.

Miles Haugen, currently the principal at Deerwood Elementary School, was hired Nov. 23 to be the principal of the new school. Haugen will continue as principal at Deerwood through the end of the current school year. In January, he will begin the process of hiring staff, communicating with parents and planning for the opening of East Lake Elementary School. Haugen started teaching in District 196 in 1984 and has been principal at Deerwood since 2004.
